MBSI

Health / Biomedical Gerontology

Why is there a need to focus on biomedical gerontology?

Perfect health is one of the most significant things that any society can possess. Innovation in health services and improved health outcomes are goals of MBSI Institute.

One focus will be on expanding the healthy life span of individuals and reducing the burden of elderly care on the healthcare system.

Another will be on preventing the spread of worldwide diseases while helping emerging populations.

Over 100 millions of America’s population is above the age of 50. They will need health care in the coming decades because the most extensive healthcare needs occur in the last one or two decades of life. Public health interventions that reduce chronic conditions are necessary to extend the health span of our population. Compressing morbidity (or postponing and lessening chronic illness) and extending health span are necessary to prevent a health crisis as this demographic ages.

Why is there a need for revolution in health?

George Church, professor of genetics at Harvard, says his lab is not concerned with diseases of aging, which are effects rather than causes; it’s trying to get at the causes of aging and reverse them. There is an important connection between worldwide health and our changing climate. As temperatures change, tropical diseases move to temperate zones. As humans expand their habitat due to population growth, new pandemics will become the norm. Epidemiologists say the potential for a more deadly and devastating pandemic than COVID-19 is real. We must expand methods to detect these issues early and stop their exponential spread. We also currently sit on the cusp of a revolutionary change in healthcare.

How does MBSI plan growth?

New technology is constantly affecting how we can provide healthcare and how we can track patient health. Digital health is the future of healthcare and MBSI will improve health outcomes by leading research in this area. MBSI plans to innovate in digital health by leveraging cloud platforms, medical informatics, data science, mobile computing, wearable sensors linked to smart devices, and personalized medicine that uses augmented, and virtual reality.

MBSI’s research in health innovation will be on solving aging and extending healthspan. If aging is solved, many diseases of old age like cancer and heart disease will be mitigated. Links between health and climate change will be another key part of MBSI research efforts. An emphasis on healthy youth development to strengthen emerging populations will be a vital part of addressing climate change influence. MBSI will partner with the CDC and NIH to develop innovative contributions. At the start of Phase I research MBSI anticipates 100 health researchers on campus with more collaborating at partner institutions to build long-term relationships.

Towards Healthier Aging and Vitality

The development of treatments that can halt aging at the cellular level is made possible by research. A variety of possible treatments are being investigated by biomedical gerontologists, including:

Senolytics: Drugs that are made to get rid of senescent cells.

Gene therapy: Methods for changing or replacing damaged genes that contribute to aging.

Using healthy stem cells to replenish aging tissues in order to restore function is known as stem cell therapy.

NAD+ boosters: Substances that raise the aging-decreasing levels of NAD+, a chemical important in energy production and cellular repair.

Mitochondrial Health: Develop methods to promote Mitogenesis and Mitophagy.

Clinical trials are testing various therapeutic techniques, and further study will assist improve these medicines to safely reverse some elements of aging.
